I had the amazing opportunity to go to the holy grail for a musical theatre fan, Broadway. While I was there, I got to see both The Book of Mormon and Hamilton (for the third time), and they certainly didn't disappoint! As well as this, I met Daniel Radcliff outside of Merrily We Roll Along. In this article, I will just be briefly going over my trip to Broadway.
The first thing I have to say is that Times Square was absolutely euphoric, being surrounded by colossal billboards and buildings who knows how tall. Most importantly, seeing the theatres and advertisements for shows and actors that I adore in reality. It was truly the ultimate experience to see my obsession with musical theatre being realised and having it surround me. While I was there, I particularly wanted to visit 42nd Street as well as see the many theatres where the magic happens. I was even staying incredibly close to both the Richard Rogers Theatre, where I saw Hamilton, and the Marquis Theatre, where The Wiz was showing at the time. With a plethora of other theatres only a block or two away,.
I have previously written an article dedicated to my experience at The Book of Mormon. This was my first ever Broadway show, and we only booked it spontaneously under 24 hours before seeing it. This almost made it more enjoyable. I have been eager to see this show for a while, and I know the soundtrack unbelievably well. The first few days I was in NYC, it rained, so soaking wet , I sprinted to the box office as that evening's audience was filtering into the auditorium and booked a ticket for the next evening. It was just as amazing as I hoped it would be, and I'm ecstatic that this was my first ever Broadway show, as it was such a positive one. That has only brought The Book of Mormon closer to my heart.
While I was there, I also saw Hamilton for the third time, and it was just as marvellous as usual. It was well cast, and I was unfathomably excited to see the iconic stage where so much musical theatre history has been made and where so many stars have stood. I even got to meet Thayne Jasperson, who many passionate Hamilton fans will know is the last remaining member from the original cast. Of course, I was keen to see this show in its original home in person. The theatre was beautiful, and the audience was well behaved, creating a really incredible production. That certainly didn't disappoint.
For all of the shows I saw, I waited afterwards to get signatures from the cast. As someone who has only ever seen shows on the West End, I can't tell you how proud I am to own not one but three playbills. The one in the centre of the picture is the signature of Daniel Radcliff from his run in Merrily We Roll Along.
Overall, this was my favourite trip I have ever been on. As well as the most tiring. I still pinch myself when I look at pictures I took of the mythical land of New York. I often compare it to Narnia, as I still can't believe it is real. All of the productions on Broadway are currently encouraging donations to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, so I will add a link to their website at the bottom to keep supporting them in their work as the philanthropic heart of Broadway, offering assistance not just nationwide but also locally to provide support to those affected by HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and other life-threatening illnesses. I have also written articles on both Hamilton and The Book of Mormon; to find them, follow the links below.
